The uncomfortable truth: your welts cannot identify the bug
Skin evidence fails both ways. The University of Nebraska says some may develop welts or bumps while others will have no reaction, and that an infestation "cannot be diagnosed by the presence of bites alone." Welts on you and none on your partner proves nothing.
The reverse trap: carpet beetles never bite, yet still leave people itching. Texas A&M is plain — carpet beetles do not bite, but hairs on the larvae are irritating to some people, and "when skin is pressed against the larvae bite-like lesions may form." Penn State Extension reports that biopsies and clinical tests confirmed larval hairs as the cause: intense itching and rash, sometimes with irritation of the respiratory tract and eyes. A case review in Pediatric Dermatology calls it an underrecognized hypersensitivity reaction whose rash "can be mistakenly construed as evidence of bites of bedbugs or other arthropods or infestation with scabies mites."
Safety note: this is identification guidance, not medical advice. A rash that persists, spreads, or looks infected belongs with a clinician. Carpet beetle ID: the adult at the window, the larva doing the damage
UC IPM describes carpet beetle adults as about 1/8 to 1/10 inch long with round bodies and an irregular mix of white, brown and dark yellow scales that wears off with age. Rutgers measures another species: black carpet beetle adults run 1/8 to 3/16 inch (3–5 mm) and are plain black. No one figure covers both.
Larvae are what matter. UC IPM notes mature larvae are slightly longer than adults, covered in dense hair tufts they flare "upright into a round plume" when disturbed. Michigan State calls them small, reddish brown and hairy, and says larvae are responsible for all of the feeding damage. Adults feed largely on nectar and pollen, outdoors — and UC IPM says indoor adults gather on sills, drapes and panes because they're attracted to sunlight. The beetle at the window is the symptom; the larva in the closet is the case.
Bed bug ID: flat, oval, hiding near your pillow
The EPA describes adults as about the size of an apple seed (5–7 mm, or 3/16 to 1/4 inch), flat-oval when unfed, balloon-like and reddish-brown after a meal; nymphs are translucent or whitish-yellow. It lists the piping, seams and tags of the mattress and box spring, and cracks on the bed frame and headboard — if a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.
The evidence test: two searches, one answer
Search A — the bed. Strip the sheets; inspect seams, piping, tags, box spring, frame and headboard. The EPA's signs: rusty or reddish stains from crushed bugs; dark excrement spots that "may bleed on the fabric like a marker would"; eggs and eggshells about 1 mm across; pale yellow shed nymph skins. Nebraska adds shed exoskeletons.
Search B — closet, rug edges, unmoved furniture. Look for damaged wool, silk, leather, fur, feathers, natural-bristle brushes and pet hair — all UC IPM larval food. The signature clue is the shed skin: UC IPM describes "brown, shell-like, bristly-looking cast skins," and says those plus a lack of webbing mean carpet beetles, not clothes moths. Purdue calls the damage similar to clothes moth damage but without webbing, with shed skin "often found mixed with lint and dust" from beneath rug edges.
Michigan State names the spots nobody checks: edges of wall-to-wall carpet, wool carpet under rarely-moved heavy furniture, heating ducts, wall voids, and abandoned bird, rodent and wasp nests. One clean pass proves nothing — look again in daylight, and move the furniture.
If it's carpet beetles: find the material, then treat it
Penn State is blunt about order of operations: successful control depends on locating the source of the infestation — stored woolens, contaminated pet food, dead insects in a wall. Leave the source and the beetles come back, which is why spraying alone fails and why scent-based home remedies rarely finish a job that is really a sanitation problem.
- Find and remove the infested item. Nothing else works first.
- Vacuum repeatedly — carpet edges, under furniture, closet floors, lint. Texas A&M says thorough vacuuming and elimination of food sources is usually enough to keep numbers low. Empty the bag into a sealed sack and bin it outdoors. Limit: vacuuming thins a population; it doesn't find the reservoir.
- Launder or dry clean. UC IPM: hot-water laundering or dry cleaning "will kill all stages of these insects." First choice for anything washable.
- Or heat it — UC IPM's spec is an oven for at least 30 minutes at 120°F or higher. Serious limit: most home ovens can't hold a setting that low, so scorching or igniting fabric is the real risk. Verify with a thermometer, never leave it unattended, and keep plastics, foam and glue-backed items out.
- Or freeze it — the actual spec is 2 weeks at temperatures below 18°F, sealed in a plastic bag. Overnight does not do it.
- Store clean woolens airtight, a layer of paper between folds.
Extension services also list registered insecticides; staying non-chemical here is a scope choice, not a verdict.
If it's bed bugs: a different fight, already written

The myth that costs months: one dusting of diatomaceous earth
DE is not useless — the EPA says desiccants can be particularly effective, since insects can't build resistance to drying out. The problem is timeline and label: they "may take several months to work," and the EPA limits them to cracks and crevices use only to reduce inhalation risk. Pool or food grade DE "should not be used," because it "can harm you when you breathe it in" — a real hazard in a bedroom. For carpet beetles it's the wrong target anyway: dust doesn't remove infested wool.
The dangerous one: total-release foggers
They often don't work. The EPA states that the pesticides used in total release foggers must contact the pest to kill it, so "if the material does not reach the cracks and crevices where bed bugs are hiding, they will not be killed." NPIC adds that foggers may not work on some pests that like to hide and "may contain substances that repel pests, causing them to retreat further into their hiding places" — the same failure documented in bait versus bug bombs for cockroaches.
They can hurt you. The propellants are flammable, so the EPA warns that improper use may cause a fire or explosion, that too much product causes a buildup of flammable vapors, and that foggers belong six feet or farther from all ignition sources, pilot lights included. Separately, on exposure not fire, CDC surveillance identified 3,222 fogger-related illnesses across 10 states, 2007–2015: 78.5% low severity, 20.7% moderate, 0.7% high, and 4 fatal cases, most often after failure to vacate during application (16.6%) and early reentry (14.8%).
Read that honestly: mostly low-severity illness with a small tail of serious harm, and it counts exposure illness, not fires. No fogger house-fire count exists. If someone is exposed and feels unwell, the EPA says to call Poison Control at (800) 222-1222, and 911 if the person is unconscious, having trouble breathing or having convulsions.
When to stop DIY-ing and make a call
- Bed bugs in more than one room or a shared building. That's a structure, not a mattress; neighboring units re-seed it.
- Beetle damage that keeps returning after the source was removed and the area vacuumed — usually a hidden reservoir in a duct, void or old nest.
- A rash that persists, spreads, or looks infected. See a clinician; no insect ID resolves a skin complaint.
Common mistakes
- Diagnosing from welts — bites aren't diagnostic either way.
- Treating the adult on the sill instead of the larvae in the closet.
- Assuming holes in wool mean moths — check for webbing.
